The hummingbird gift is based on plate 99: Trochilidae from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms of Nature) from 1904 showing a variety of hummingbirds in their natural surroundings. About the Artist Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (February 16, 1834 – August 9, 1919) Haeckel was a German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor and artist. In his lifetime, the naturalist discovered thousands of new species and mapped a genealogical tree relating all life forms. He named biological terms including ecology, phylum, phylogeny, and stem cell. He created over 100 detailed scientific illustrations in his Kunstformen der Natur.
