Vintage Little Bo Peep,

A vintage illustration by Clara M. Burd from the children's nursery rhyme "Little Bo Peep" which begins as, "Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep and doesn't know where to find them. Leave them alone and they'll come home, wagging their tails behind them." There have been many variations on the words to the rhyme since the first manuscript that contained only the first verse was found in 1805. Some variations say "dragging their tails behind them" or "bringing their tails behind them" Additional verses were added in later years, and the full rhyme was printed in 1810 in "Gammer Gurton's Garland." This illustration is from the third verse in the rhyme where Little Bo Peep found her sheep with their tails hanging in a tree to dry. The American artist, Clara M. Burd (1873-1933) was born in New York, and studied art in New York City and later in Paris. She is best known for her illustrations for children’s books, but she also illustrated for magazine covers, designed stained glass and murals for churches, and painted children’s portraits and scenes from historical periods.
