Vintage - Princess & Her Court at the Lake,

A vintage children's book illustration by Henry Justice Ford from the 1901 book edited by Andrew Lang titled "The Brown Fairy Book." This illustration is from one of the fairy tales in the book's collection, and features a princess and her ladies-in-waiting lounging in a wooded area beside a small lake as they wile away the day. Some of the ladies are bathing in the lake while others lie in the grass. The illustration is captioned, "The Gnome Falls in Love with the Princess." The English artist and illustrator, Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) often signed his work H. J. Ford. He first became well known for his illustrations for 25 collections of Andrew Lang’s fairy books which sold worldwide in the 1880s and 1890s. Lang titled his books using colours such as “The Red Fairy” and “The Green Fairy.” Ford also exhibited landscapes and paintings of historical subjects at the Royal Academy of Art.
