A vintage children's book illustration by Honour C. Appleton from the story of "The Little Mermaid" as found in the 1922 book "Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen." It depicts a mermaid swimming in rough seas as a sailing ship in the distance behind her struggles to stay afloat while being tossed in the waves. The caption under the illustration says, "She dived deep down under the water, rising again between the waves." Honour C. Appleton (1879-1951) was an English illustrator and artist who illustrated over 150 books in her career, beginning with children’s books and moving to literary classics.
