Virgin of the Seven Sorrows (late 16th Century, Low Countries) by Master of the Female Half-Lengths This devotion recalls the Sorrows the Virgin Mother of God endured. Virgin Mary is portrayed sorrowful and in tears, with one or seven swords piercing her heart, iconography based on the prophecy of Simeon in Luke 2:34–35. After reflecting on the Seven Sorrows (1) the Prophecy of Simeon and Anna (2) the Flight into Egypt (3) the Loss of the Child Jesus (4) the Condemnation of Jesus (5) the Crucifixion (6) the Retrieval of Jesus' Body from the Cross (7) and the Burial of Jesus) Master of the Female Half-Lengths is the notname given to a painter, or more likely a group of painters of a workshop, active in the Low Countries in the early sixteenth century.
