Wanted Thomas Jefferson T-Shirt
The British Crown has dealt with many troublemakers throughout its long and occasionally glorious history.
Pirates. Pretenders to the throne. Members of Parliament with inconvenient opinions. That one period with the Vikings again.
None of them wrote it down.
Thomas Jefferson wrote it down.
In 1776, Mr. Jefferson — lawyer, architect, philosopher, amateur scientist, accomplished violinist, and apparently a man with extremely strong opinions about the divine rights of colonists and extremely poor opinions about the divine rights of kings — sat down with a quill pen and proceeded to compose the single most inflammatory document in the history of the British Empire.
He listed the grievances. All of them. In detail. With specificity. In ink. On parchment. For posterity.
He then signed his name to it.
In large letters.
The charges were serious. Treason. Sedition. Conspiracy Against the Crown. The kind of permanent record that follows a man considerably further than his permanent record was ever intended to follow him — all the way, as it turned out, to the Presidency of the United States, the Louisiana Purchase, and the face of the two dollar bill.
A bill which, in a development His Majesty would have found deeply aggravating, Americans consider slightly lucky.
The reward was one thousand gold sovereigns. Substantial. Earnest. Completely uncollected.
Because nobody was turning in Thomas Jefferson.
Not then. Not ever.
The document, meanwhile, went on to become rather famous. You may have heard of it. It starts with a fairly bold opening statement about certain truths being self evident and goes considerably further from there.
His Majesty was not pleased.
History was delighted.
Wanted.
Thomas Jefferson.
Treason, Sedition & Conspiracy Against the Crown.
He wrote it down. In ink. For everyone.
Perfect for history buffs, proud Americans, lovers of founding era humour, fans of strongly worded letters, and anyone who has ever put their grievances in writing and felt considerably better for having done so.
A perfect gift for Fourth of July, Independence Day, Presidents Day, history teachers, English majors, constitutional law enthusiasts, anyone who has ever written a strongly worded letter to anyone about anything, and anyone celebrating 250 years of self evident truths.
Collect all four — Franklin, Jefferson, Washington and Revere. His Majesty insists.
Out_of_Whack — For those who ask for forgiveness... Eventually.
