William Blake Angels notebook. Pen, ink and watercolor circa 1805-08. English poet and artist William Blake regularly illustrated famous scenes from the Bible. Christ in the Sepulchre Guarded by Angels depicts the body of Jesus Christ laid in the tomb after the crucifixion. The guardians represent the two angels discovered by Mary Magdalene shortly after the resurrection. Blake postitions the angels bowing over the body with wings upstretched and hands clasped in prayer. Both figures are clad in white that matches the linen covering the body of Jesus, and a holy light emanates about their faces. A beautiful gift for fans of Blake, poetry, English painting, and Bible illustrations.
