Rain, Steam, and Speed – The Great Western Railway, an oil on canvas painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1844, sends a steam locomotive rushing through rain across the Maidenhead Railway Bridge over the Thames. Rain, steam and golden light blur the boundary between the powerful new machine and the surrounding landscape, capturing both the excitement and speed of the railway age. Turner even included a tiny hare running ahead of the train, contrasting the speed of nature with the mechanised speed of the locomotive.
