Wreck of the U.S.S. Maine Postcard

Wreck of the U.S.S. Maine Postcard

The USS Maine (ACR-1) was an armoured cruiser and became a symbol of American naval power and national tragedy in the late 19th century. The ship was commissioned in 1895, and it was one of the first steel-hulled warships built for the United States. The Maine was sent to Havana, Cuba, during a period of increased tensions between the United States and Spain, primarily due to the Cuban War of Independence. On February 15, 1898, a massive explosion ripped through the ship while it was anchored in Havana Harbour, leading to the sinking of the USS Maine. The explosion resulted in the deaths of 260 crew members and marked a significant catalyst for the Spanish-American War. The sinking of the USS Maine fuelled public outrage in the United States, with many Americans believing that the explosion was the result of Spanish sabotage. The rallying cry "Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain!" became a prominent slogan, and it contributed to the U.S. decision to go to war with Spain. In April 1898, the United States declared war on Spain, marking the beginning of the Spanish-American War. While the exact cause of the explosion remained disputed, subsequent investigations suggested that it was likely an internal explosion caused by the ignition of coal dust or a spontaneous combustion in the ship's coal bunker. Nevertheless, the USS Maine remains a symbol of American patriotism and sacrifice, and it played a significant role in the emergence of the United States as a global naval power.

Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
