How many times...? I've had people who've known me all of my life suddenly lose all concept of deaf awareness. They assume that because they can hear, so can I. At moments like that, I give up. I either make it obvious that I'm not even pretending to be their audience, or I smile sweetly and let them think someone is listening.
Why don't I just tell them that I can't hear? I could. If it was a stranger, acquaintance or recently met friend, then I most certainly would. But as for the rest, they've had decades of experience with me, and reminders aplenty. If they wanted to know, then they would.
