Zone One! Refers to the heart rate zone associated with base conditioning. This zone can be achieved by consistent lightcardiovascular exercise and can be sustained for long periods of time while easily carrying on a conversation. This “aerobic base” is a crucial component to overall cardiovascular fitness as studies have shown the human body has the ability to improve this aerobic system far greater than the aerobic system(zone 2 and up). For an endurance athlete much time should be spent in this zone to increase the ability to effectively process oxygen at a cellular level and overall “core” aerobic fitness. While higher intensity workouts are beneficial for increasing lactate threshold,speed, and performance etc. Recovery time must be taken in-between more intense workouts. Using a heart rate monitor one can preemptively set the expectation of a work out and keep the pacing to stay in Zone 1. Zone One reminds us the intensity level of the workout for a given day (intentionally keeping the heart rate slow and steady) and in a humourous way lets others on the trails know that for that day we are intentionally running more slowly that are capable of… Building this type of consistency into ourdaily lives is a healthy and sustainable path to mental and physical fitness.
