Horse drawn narrowboat Watford UK Poster
From an old photographic postcard, this atmospheric sepia print shows a horse drawn narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal at Watford in Hertfordshire in about 1910. There is smoke rising from the stove chimney on the boat's cabin, and the horse is slightly blurred due to movement, which makes a change as the horses were usually stopped to pose. Behind the boat is a misty background of trees which contrast with the deep shadows of those in the foreground.
