Over the past two decades, the sound quality of music has become poorer and poorer due to the loudness war! Once the first mastering engineer pushed the envelope of volume upward, then everyone would follow. Fear and insecurity causes the trend to continue, as musicians and record company executives worry that a song that is not as loud as the competition will not sell, or will not be the exact same volume on a music player. The musical peaks of the past have all been flattened, limited and even clipped to achieve a constant volume as close to digital maximum as possible! The cost of this battle is music that is dense and loud, but lacking any dynamics, and sometimes very audibly distorted! I want everyone to be aware of this trend and speak out against it, so we might return to the better quality music production that we had more than 20 years ago!
