Washington Cross-Dressing Delaware Poster
On Christmas Night in 1776, George Washington led his troops across the frozen Delaware River in a surprise attack that became the Battle of Trenton. But the biggest surprise was Gen. Washington's outfit, a fetching crimson cocktail dress, tiered and fringed, with a black feather boa and black mesh stockings. Oh-la-liberty! Inspired by this fetching Founding Father, the Continental Army defeated the Hessians due, most historians agree, to their commanding officer's choice of an absurdly bulky crinoline hoop skirt with 134" sweep. Washington's original outfit was lost in the battle, but thankfully a soldier in the next boat made this sketch of Washington Cross-Dressing the Delaware.
